10 reasons to visit Copenhagen

The restaurants

And we’re not just talking about Michelin-starred Noma – there’s so much more to the Copenhagen food scene than Noma and super gourmet dining.
If you’re into fish, make sure you book into Fiskbaren, a industiral cool restaurant in the trendy Meatpacking district
that’s packed on weekend evenings and does stunning, er, fish. Other highlights include Kiin Kiin, a Michelin-starred Thai; Retour Steak,
where you can get insanely tasty half kilo rumps; and Relae, an informal place that’s great for dates
and the kind of place Noma chefs eat at on their days off. For a brunch the morning after the night before,
try Bodega, a cafe-cum-bar by the city’s famous cemetery where you can sit outside in the sun with scrambled eggs for a giant burger.

Hygge

Visit Copenhagen in winter and you’ll find yourself surrounded by hygge. Pronounced hoo-gah, this is a toasty warm Danish concept
that doesn’t have a direct translation into English. It’s all about creating a cosy atmosphere, enjoying the good life,
lighting candles and surrounding yourself with friends and laughter – and wrapping yourself in a sheepskin blanket.
If only we could import some of that to London…

Tivoli Gardens

Young or old, the Tivoli Gardens amusement park is a must for anyone visiting Copenhagen.
Founded in 1843, the Tivoli has become something of a national treasure and has attracted star guests from Hans Christmas Andersen
to Walt Disney, all alured by its magic. You’ll find lush gardens, exotic architecture and by night,
thousands of multi-coloured lights give it a fairy tale feeling.

It has a growing street food scene

If you’re the kind of person that likes to spend their weekend trawling the stalls of London markets Street Feast and KERB,
then you’ll be glad to know you can get your street food fix here too. Head to Paper Island for the city’s first street food market,
where you can pull up a deck chair by the water and sample food from around the globe from Mexican to Korean.
‘Genuine, honest and aesthetic’ is the motto at CPH Street Food, which often collaborates with artists
and musicians too so there’s plenty for the eyes and ears too. And don’t worry, there’s indoor seating too.

The design

Oh the design. Every clothes shop, cafe and person on the street is perfectly designed.
But it’s the interiors shops that you can really make a pilgrimage too, if you’re into the Scandi aesthetic.
Make sure you stop by at HAY House, where you’ll find furniture, accessories and rugs by HAY laid out as an aparment across two floors.
It’s the quintessential Danish design experience. Also make time for Ilums Bolighus, a small but perfectly formed deparment store
where you’ll find all your favourite Scandi brands from Muuto to Arne Jacobsen and Skandinavisk.

Cycling culture

Everyone cycles in Copenhagen, including us tourists. Use one of the Copenhagen City Bikes with in-built GPS
– it’s their Boris Bike equivalent – or rent one from the ubiquitous shops. Your hotel might even offer free ones
– the hip SP34 does. Once you’ve secured your trusty iron horse,
you will have this charming city at your fingertips and easily navigable in one day.

Meatpacking district

Much like New York’s Meatpacking district became a hipster hub, Copenhagen’s Kødbyen area is packed with bright young
taking advantage of its many bars, cafes and restaurants. Highlights include its weekend food market,
beer and pulled pork mecca War Pigs and boisterous dancing bar Jolene. It’s also home to Fiskebar and pizza favourite Mother.

It’s very close to London

It’s only an hour and 50 minutes to Copenhagen from our fair capital, which makes it eminently suitable for a weekend jaunt.
Flights are very cheap, costing as litte as £20 return if you book ahead, which makes the high cost of living in Copenhagen itself more palatable.
And once you arrive at the airport, it’s a swift 20 minute metro ride to the city centre.

The shopping

Clothes, fashion, homeware – Copenhagen is drowning in desirable stuff.
So much so that you’ll want to make sure you have a cabin bag booked at least for the return journey.
Make sure cult Swedish brand Acne – and its archive store – jewellers Figaros Bryllup and designs shop Stilleben are on your list
– and that you’ve saved a bit beforehand…

The culture

If history and palaces are more your bag than trends restaurants and bars, Copenhagen is just as suitable.
The Little Mermaid statue, the postcard-perfect Nyhavn strip and Amalienborg Palace should be on your list.
If you’ve got a bit of extra time and love art, make a day trip out the beautiful Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, 40 km north of Copenhagen.
